Chapter 25 - The Federal Sweep

The sound of Arthur’s enraged scream echoed through the warehouse, giving away his exact position.
Nathan stepped around the edge of the shipping container, raising the suppressed pistol, aiming it squarely at Arthur’s chest.
"It's over, Arthur," Nathan said, his voice hard as steel. "Drop the gun."
Arthur stared at his useless, bricked tablet, the realization of his absolute defeat finally crashing down upon him. The cartel money was gone. His anonymity was destroyed. A teenager had completely outmaneuvered him.
He slowly looked up at Nathan, his eyes filled with venom.
"Do you know what the cartels do to people who lose fifty million dollars, Nathan?" Arthur whispered, a terrifyingly manic edge to his voice. "They don't just kill you. They take their time. They are going to hunt your family to the ends of the earth. You haven't won anything. You just painted a target on your son's back."
Arthur raised the snub-nosed revolver, preparing to fire.
Before he could pull the trigger, a deafening explosion shattered the warehouse doors.
Blinding tactical lights flooded the dark interior. A dozen heavily armed FBI SWAT operatives poured into the building, laser sights cutting through the dusty air.
"FBI! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!"
Nathan instantly lowered his pistol, placing it carefully on the concrete and raising his hands in the air.
Arthur hesitated, staring at the swarm of federal agents. For a brief second, he considered firing, choosing suicide-by-cop over a cartel execution.
"Don't do it, Arthur!" Agent Sarah Collins shouted, stepping through the tactical line, her sidearm drawn and aimed directly at his head. "If you raise that gun, I will put you down right here!"
Arthur let out a long, defeated breath. He dropped the revolver. It clattered loudly against the floor.
Two tactical operatives rushed forward, tackling Arthur to the ground, aggressively zip-tying his hands behind his back.
Sarah lowered her weapon and walked over to Nathan. She looked at his soaked, bruised appearance, then at the ruined SUV near the entrance where Claire was currently being checked by a tactical medic.
"Are you okay, Nathan?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with concern.
"Ethan," Nathan gasped, his adrenaline finally crashing. "Did Ethan stop the upload?"
Sarah tapped her earpiece, listening to the federal cyber division. She smiled, a profound relief washing over her face.
"Your son is a genius, Nathan. The database is perfectly secure. He routed the entire upload into an FBI sandbox. The families are completely safe."
Nathan closed his eyes, leaning back against the cold steel of the shipping container. The nightmare was finally over.
"Get him out of here," Sarah ordered, pointing at Arthur as he was dragged to his feet.

As Arthur was led past Nathan, the lawyer turned his head, his eyes burning with a dark, unyielding promise.
"The ghost is dead, Nathan," Arthur sneered. "But the cartels are very real. Sleep with one eye open."
