Chapter 34 - The Castle Doctrine

"Go!" Ethan screamed over the hiss of the deploying tear gas, shoving his mother toward the basement door.

Michael grabbed Claire's arm, pulling her and Emily down the stairs toward the reinforced steel panic room they had installed after Marcus's initial threats a year ago.

Ethan didn't wait to see them secure the door. He tied his shirt over his nose and mouth, sprinting through the thickening smoke, up the grand staircase toward his second-floor cyber-lab.

He slammed the heavy oak door shut, locking the deadbolt, and dove into his command chair.

The Harper mansion wasn't just a house; it was a fully integrated smart home, heavily upgraded by Ethan over the past twelve months. He had wired every door, every camera, and every light fixture into a centralized, closed-loop server.

Ethan’s fingers flew across the keyboard, initiating the "Castle Doctrine" protocol he had secretly coded for an absolute worst-case scenario.

Heavy ballistic steel shutters violently slammed down over every exterior window on the first and second floors, plunging the mansion into absolute darkness.

The digital security feeds lit up on Ethan's monitors. Using infrared cameras, he could clearly see the cartel mercenaries moving through the sprawling front lawn.

There were eight of them. Highly trained, moving in synchronized tactical formations, carrying suppressed assault rifles and thermal optics.

They weren't thugs; they were a professional death squad.

"You want to play in the dark?" Ethan whispered, a fierce, terrifying focus settling over him. "Let's play."

Downstairs, the lead mercenary kicked the heavy oak front door. It didn't budge; the electronic deadbolts were fused shut by Ethan's lockdown protocol.

The mercenary signaled to his team. Two men stepped forward with a heavy explosive breaching charge, adhering it to the center of the door.

Ethan watched on the camera. He waited until the mercenaries stacked up on the porch, preparing to blow the door.

"Accessing exterior audio," Ethan muttered, typing a rapid command.

He routed the mansion's massive, high-fidelity surround-sound entertainment system directly to the porch speakers.

Instead of waiting for the blast, Ethan hit play on a highly amplified, deafening loop of a high-pitched, 120-decibel siren.

The sheer volume of the sound instantly shattered the tactical focus of the mercenaries. Several of them dropped their weapons to cover their ears in agony.

Simultaneously, Ethan triggered the automated sprinkler system on the front lawn, but not with water. He had re-routed the high-pressure lines to the estate's massive foam fire-suppression tanks.

A blinding, thick wave of fire-retardant foam blasted across the porch, completely covering the explosive charge and the disoriented mercenaries.

"Breach denied," Ethan smiled coldly.

But the smile faded quickly. The rear camera feed flickered.

The mercenaries hadn't all attacked the front. A secondary team of four men had bypassed the electronic locks on the heavy kitchen reinforced glass by cutting the power lines to the rear of the house.

They were inside.
