Chapter 41

The morning after the Harper Foundation’s grand anniversary gala dawned with a crisp, clear sky that seemed to mirror the newfound peace within the family. Nathan Harper sat at the heavy mahogany desk in his home office, a steaming cup of dark roast coffee resting beside a stack of perfectly organized grant proposals. For the first time in two years, his shoulders lacked the crushing, invisible weight of constant vigilance. The cartel was dismantled. Arthur Vance was rotting in a federal penitentiary. The Foundation was thriving, actively saving lives and exposing corporate corruption.

Claire walked into the room, her bare feet silent on the plush carpet. She wore a simple silk robe, her hair still slightly damp from the shower. She wrapped her arms around Nathan’s shoulders from behind, resting her cheek against his temple. "You're up early for a man who celebrated until two in the morning," she murmured, her voice thick with affection and lingering sleep.

"I was just thinking," Nathan smiled, leaning back into her embrace. "About how far we've come. We built something beautiful out of an absolute nightmare, Claire. I wanted to sit here and just... feel it. The quiet."

"It is a good quiet," she agreed, moving to sit on the edge of his desk. "Ethan is still snoring. Michael took Emily out for breakfast. We actually have an entirely normal Sunday ahead of us. No lawyers, no FBI agents, no looking over our shoulders."

Their peaceful moment was abruptly shattered by the sharp, demanding ring of the secure line on Nathan’s desk. It was a dedicated, encrypted phone provided by FBI Agent Sarah Collins, meant only for absolute emergencies. Nathan and Claire stared at the blinking red light. The silence in the room instantly turned toxic. Nathan picked up the receiver, his voice tight. "Harper."

"Nathan, it's Sarah," her voice was breathless, carrying the distinct echo of a busy command center. "I need you to lock down the Foundation's servers right now. I don't have time to explain, but Arthur Vance didn't act alone, and whatever he left behind just woke up."
