Chapter 31 - The Mole Revealed

The marina district was quiet, enveloped in a thick, rolling coastal fog that muted the city lights.

Sarah parked her unmarked sedan in a dark alleyway, giving them a clear line of sight to the blinking red dot on the GPS tracker displayed on her dashboard monitor.

"He's parked near Pier 12," Sarah whispered, handing Nathan a pair of high-powered tactical binoculars. "Do you see him?"

Nathan adjusted the focus, scanning the row of luxury yachts bobbing in the dark water.

"There," Nathan pointed. "Black SUV. Ramirez is sitting in the driver's seat."

Through the binoculars, Nathan could clearly see Agent Ramirez. He looked deeply stressed, chain-smoking a cigarette, constantly checking his rearview mirror.

"Who is he waiting for?" Nathan asked.

"The cartel's cleaner," Sarah replied grimly. "When an operation goes this wrong, the cartel sends someone to collect the assets and eliminate the liabilities. Ramirez thinks he's trading the backdoor ledger for his life. He doesn't realize he's a liability."

Ten minutes passed in agonizing silence.

Then, a sleek, black town car pulled into the marina, its headlights turned off. It parked directly next to Ramirez’s SUV.

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out. He moved with a terrifying, predatory grace.

"That's the proxy," Sarah said, unbuckling her seatbelt. "Stay here, Nathan. Keep the engine running. If this goes bad, you drive away."

Before Nathan could argue, Sarah slipped out of the car, moving silently through the thick fog, using the parked boats for cover.

Through the binoculars, Nathan watched the exchange unfold.

Ramirez rolled down his window, looking terrified. He held out the silver external drive containing Ethan’s fake backdoor.

The tall man in the trench coat didn't take the drive.

Instead, he reached into his coat and produced a suppressed handgun, aiming it directly at Ramirez’s face.

Ramirez screamed, dropping the drive and throwing his hands up in a desperate plea for mercy.

The cartel didn't want the money back. They wanted to sever the loose ends.

"FBI! Drop the weapon!" Sarah’s voice rang out, shattering the quiet marina.

She stepped out from behind a concrete pylon, her weapon leveled squarely at the cartel proxy.

The proxy didn't hesitate. He spun with lightning speed, firing twice at Sarah.

Sarah dove to the wet pavement, returning fire. Her shot caught the proxy in the shoulder. He grunted, dropping his weapon, and sprinted into the thick fog, disappearing into the shadows of the marina.

Sarah didn't chase him. She scrambled to her feet and rushed to Ramirez’s SUV, ripping the driver's side door open and dragging her former partner out onto the concrete.

"Hands behind your back!" Sarah roared, slamming Ramirez against the side of the car, violently securing the zip-ties.

"Sarah, please!" Ramirez sobbed, completely broken. "They were going to kill my family! They threatened my kids!"

"You sold out the badge, David," Sarah hissed, her voice filled with absolute disgust. "You sold out the Harpers. You're done."
