Chapter 46

The atmosphere in the Harper basement was thick with focused, heavy silence. Ethan sat at his primary terminal, the blood-stained titanium USB drive plugged into an isolated, air-gapped forensic workstation. He had been running complex decryption algorithms for over four hours, consuming an alarming amount of caffeine in the process. Nathan, Claire, Michael, and Sarah stood behind him, watching the lines of code violently cascade across the monitors.
"This is brilliant, but it's fundamentally flawed," Ethan muttered, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the wooden desk. "The creator used a polymorphic encryption key. It changes its fundamental structure every three seconds. If you guess wrong, it triggers a wipe and permanently deletes the data."
"Can you freeze the cycle?" Sarah asked, her arms crossed nervously over her chest.
"I don't need to freeze it. I just need to anticipate its pattern," Ethan smiled slightly, a flash of absolute genius illuminating his tired face. "It's using a Fibonacci sequence variable to determine its next mutation. It's an elegant mathematical lock, but it’s still bound by human logic and predictable mathematics."
Ethan typed a final, rapid sequence of commands and hit the enter key with a definitive, heavy thud. The cascading code suddenly froze. The screen flashed bright green, and a single file folder appeared on the desktop, simply titled: ECLIPSE.
"We're in," Ethan announced, clicking open the folder with a sense of triumph.
The room collectively held its breath as hundreds of documents, offshore bank routing numbers, and highly classified surveillance photos flooded the screen. But what caught Nathan’s attention immediately was a master spreadsheet at the very top of the directory.
"Open that one," Nathan pointed sharply.
Ethan clicked the file. It was a comprehensive ledger, but unlike Vance's previous cartel accounts, this ledger detailed political contributions, blackmail material, and orchestrated judicial appointments. At the top of the list, marked as the primary beneficiary of the cartel's laundered money, was a name that made Sarah Collins physically step back in shock.

"Senator Marcus Thorne," Sarah whispered, her face going entirely pale. "He's the chairman of the Federal Oversight Committee. He dictates the entire budget for the FBI and the DEA."
"He doesn't just dictate the budget," Michael said, his voice cold and hard. "He owns the cartel. Vance was just his middleman."
