Chapter 23 - The Trojan Horse

Deep inside the Harper Foundation’s downtown server room, Ethan’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.

The countdown timer on the primary monitor read 00:41:12.

Michael paced nervously behind him, biting his fingernails. "Ethan, the database is locked. You said he encrypted the outer wall. How are you going to stop the upload?"

"I can't break his encryption from the outside, Uncle Michael," Ethan said, his eyes scanning cascading lines of complex code. "Silas—or Arthur, or whoever he is—is using a military-grade AES-256 cipher. It would take a supercomputer a thousand years to crack it."

"Then we've lost," Michael whispered, his face pale. "He's going to leak the families' identities."

"I didn't say we lost," Ethan replied, a sharp, brilliant smile touching his lips. "I can't break the door down. But I don't have to."

Ethan opened a hidden directory on his local machine.

"When Dad left for the pier, he took the encrypted flash drive Arthur demanded," Ethan explained, typing rapidly. "But I didn't just load the foundation's transfer authorization codes onto it."

Michael stopped pacing. "What else did you put on it?"

"A digital Trojan Horse," Ethan said proudly. "A highly aggressive, dormant malware package I wrote last month. The moment Arthur plugs that drive into his laptop to verify the codes, my malware wakes up. It doesn't steal his data. It acts as a beacon. It creates a reverse-tunnel directly through his firewalls, straight back to this server."

"You booby-trapped the money," Michael realized, a glimmer of hope returning to his eyes.

"Exactly. Arthur thinks he's getting the keys to the kingdom. But the second he inserts that drive, he's handing me the administrative controls to his entire hidden network."

Ethan looked at the countdown timer. 00:39:45.

"The problem is, Dad still has the drive," Ethan said, the smile fading into deep concern. "Arthur hasn't plugged it in yet. If Dad doesn't hand it over, or if Arthur decides he doesn't need it and just lets the timer run out... the families are exposed."

"Your dad will buy you the time," Michael said firmly, placing a hand on his nephew’s shoulder. "Nathan knows what's at stake."

Suddenly, Ethan's secondary monitor flared to life. A massive map of the city appeared, a red dot blinking furiously down by the docks.

"Wait," Ethan frowned, typing a command. "That's not Arthur's network. That's Mom's car. The SUV's collision sensors just triggered a catastrophic impact alert. The airbags deployed."

Michael's blood ran cold. "They crashed."

"Or they rammed him," Ethan said, grabbing his cell phone. "I'm calling Agent Collins. The FBI needs to breach Pier 44 right now."
