Following the Money

barely slept that night.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Vanessa standing in the living room, clutching the fake pregnancy bump as it slowly deflated. He had spent months believing he was making impossible choices between two women. Now he understood someone else had been making those choices for him.
At sunrise, Detective Sarah Collins arrived at the mansion with a search warrant and two forensic accountants.
"We're going through every transaction connected to Lucas Reed," she said as she spread dozens of bank statements across the dining table. "If he used your money to fund other operations, we'll find it."
Nathan nodded.
"I'll cooperate with whatever you need."
Claire quietly poured coffee for everyone. It was the first normal thing anyone had done in days, yet it somehow made the room feel less like a crime scene and more like a home trying to recover.
Ethan sat beside Daniel, studying the financial documents.
"I don't understand any of this."
Daniel pointed to a highlighted transfer.
"You're not supposed to. That's how these scams work."
He traced a line from one account to another.
"Your father wired eight million dollars into a company called Horizon Development."
Sarah continued the trail.
"Within twelve hours, the money was divided into six different accounts."
"Why?"
"So no single transfer attracts attention."
Another accountant turned his laptop toward Nathan.
"The money didn't stay in real estate."
Graphs filled the screen.
"It paid luxury vehicles."
"Private travel."
"High-end jewelry."
"And..."
He clicked another folder.
"Cash withdrawals in three different states."
Nathan rubbed his forehead.
"So the project never existed."
Sarah shook her head.
"The company existed."
"The investment didn't."
Claire frowned.
"They built an entire business just to steal money?"
"They built the appearance of one."
Sarah opened another file.
"We've identified seven shell companies connected to Lucas."
"Each one looks legitimate."
"Each one exists only long enough to receive money."
Ethan stared at the list.
"How many people did he trick?"
Sarah hesitated.
"We've confirmed eleven victims."
Nathan looked up.
"Only eleven?"
"We suspect many more."
The room fell silent.
Nathan had spent years believing financial fraud happened to careless people.
Now he realized intelligence wasn't always enough.
Loneliness had become the most expensive mistake of his life.
Across town, Vanessa sat alone in an interview room.
The fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead.
Detective Collins entered carrying a recorder.
"I'm turning this on now."
Vanessa nodded.
"I understand."
Sarah pressed the button.
"For the record, state your full name."
"Vanessa Marie Lewis."
"Were you working with Lucas Reed?"
Vanessa stared at the metal table.
"...Yes."
"How long?"
"Almost four years."
Sarah kept her voice calm.
"When did you meet Nathan Harper?"
"Nine months ago."
"By accident?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
"It was planned."
Sarah waited.
Vanessa swallowed hard.
"Lucas researched wealthy businessmen who were emotionally vulnerable."
"He found articles about Nathan."
"The rumors about his marriage."
"The interviews."
"The charity events."
"He said Nathan would be the easiest target."
Sarah made a note.
"Why?"
"Because he still believed people."
Vanessa wiped away a tear.
"Lucas always said kind people were easier to manipulate."
Sarah leaned forward.
"The fake pregnancy."
"Whose idea was it?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Mine..."
Then she immediately shook her head.
"No."
She corrected herself.
"I suggested pretending I might be pregnant."
"Lucas said pretending wasn't enough."
"He bought the inflatable belly."
Sarah looked up.
"So he planned everything."
Vanessa nodded.
"He even rehearsed what I should say."
"When to cry."
"When to stay silent."
"When to make Nathan feel guilty."
Her voice broke.
"I stopped feeling like a person."
"I became a character."
Back at the mansion, another discovery changed everything.
One of the forensic accountants raised his hand.
"Detective."
Sarah walked over.
"What did you find?"
He enlarged a transaction on his monitor.
"This payment came from Horizon Development."
Nathan looked closer.
The recipient surprised him.
Harper Foundation.
Claire frowned.
"Our charity?"
The accountant nodded.
"Fifty thousand dollars."
Claire looked confused.
"We never accepted donations from Horizon."
Daniel quickly opened the foundation's accounting records.
The payment existed.
It had arrived six months earlier.
Labeled as an anonymous corporate donation.
Sarah's expression hardened.
"This wasn't generosity."
Nathan understood immediately.
"They were laundering credibility."
Sarah nodded.
"If a respected charity accepted money from Horizon..."
"Other investors would trust them."
Claire felt sick.
"Our foundation was being used."
"Without your knowledge."
Sarah closed the file.
"This proves Lucas wasn't only stealing money."
"He was buying reputations."
Late that afternoon, Michael arrived carrying another folder.
"I found these while cleaning my garage."
He placed several old photographs on the table.
Most showed family vacations.
Birthday parties.
Picnics.
Then Ethan noticed one picture.
"Wait."
He picked it up.
Lucas stood in the background of a barbecue held nearly three years earlier.
He wasn't posing.
He wasn't smiling.
He was watching Vanessa from across the yard.
Michael frowned.
"I never noticed him before."
Sarah studied the photograph carefully.
"He was planning long before anyone realized."
She turned the picture over.
The date written on the back made everyone pause.
It was taken almost a year before Vanessa disappeared.
Nathan slowly exhaled.
"So he didn't destroy a marriage."
"He hunted one."
No one disagreed.
As evening settled over the mansion, Sarah's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen, and her expression changed.
Nathan noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
She looked up.
"We've just received a report."
"Lucas Reed emptied every known bank account."
Daniel frowned.
"When?"
"Less than an hour ago."
Nathan's stomach tightened.
"He's running."
Sarah slowly shook her head.
"No."
She looked toward the front window, where darkness had begun to cover the estate.
"If he were running..."
"...he wouldn't have transferred the money into accounts inside this state."
Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Then what's he doing?"
Sarah slipped her phone into her pocket.
May you like
"I'm afraid..."
"...he's getting ready to finish what he started."
