Emily's Missing Future

Three days passed before Vanessa asked to see her daughter.

Detective Sarah Collins read the request twice before placing it on Nathan's dining table.

"She refuses to discuss anything else until she knows Emily is safe."

Michael stared at the paper.

"For three years she never asked about her."

Sarah nodded.

"I know."

He looked away, struggling to keep his emotions under control.

"But people don't always break at the beginning."

"Sometimes they break after they lose everything."

Claire quietly set another cup of coffee in front of Michael.

"You don't have to agree."

Michael rubbed his tired eyes.

"I don't know what's right anymore."

Nathan remained silent.

This decision wasn't his to make.

Neither was the pain.

That afternoon, Michael drove home with Emily sitting quietly in the back seat.

The seven-year-old hugged a faded teddy bear against her chest.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Are we going to see Mommy?"

Michael tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I don't know."

Emily looked out the window.

"My teacher says people make mistakes."

Michael forced a small smile.

"She isn't wrong."

"Then why does everyone get sad when they talk about Mommy?"

He had rehearsed dozens of answers over the years.

None of them seemed good enough.

"Because some mistakes hurt for a long time."

Emily nodded as though she understood.

Then she surprised him.

"I still drew her a birthday picture."

Michael glanced into the rearview mirror.

"You did?"

She reached into her backpack and carefully unfolded a piece of paper.

It showed a little girl holding hands with both her parents.

The three figures smiled beneath a bright blue sky.

Michael felt his throat tighten.

"You still love her."

Emily looked confused.

"She's my mommy."

As though there had never been another option.

The following morning, Michael agreed to the visit.

It would take place at the county detention center under police supervision.

No physical barriers.

No handcuffs.

Only one hour.

Sarah met them outside.

"If Emily becomes uncomfortable, we end the visit immediately."

Michael nodded.

"I understand."

Claire had come as well.

Not because anyone asked her.

Because she couldn't stop thinking about the little girl caught between everyone's mistakes.

Inside the visitation room, Vanessa waited alone.

She had traded designer dresses for a plain gray inmate uniform.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was tied back.

For the first time, she looked exactly her age.

The confident woman who had manipulated an entire family seemed to have disappeared.

The door opened.

Emily walked in first.

She stopped.

For several seconds she simply stared.

"Mommy?"

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Every apology she had practiced vanished.

Emily ran across the room.

Vanessa dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Neither of them spoke.

They only cried.

Michael stood near the doorway.

He didn't interrupt.

He didn't look away.

Claire quietly reached for a tissue.

Nathan remained still, unsure whether he belonged in the room at all.

After several minutes, Emily pulled back.

"Why didn't you come home?"

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"I made terrible choices."

"Were you mad at us?"

"No."

"Then why?"

Vanessa searched desperately for words a child could understand.

"I thought I could fix my life."

Emily tilted her head.

"Did it work?"

Vanessa broke completely.

"No."

"It only broke more lives."

Emily reached into her backpack.

"I made something."

She handed Vanessa another drawing.

This one looked different.

The little girl stood in the middle.

On one side was Michael.

On the other stood Vanessa.

Between them stretched a long crack.

Above it, written in careful handwriting, were the words:

Can we be a family again?

Vanessa stared at the drawing.

Her tears fell onto the paper.

"I don't know if we can."

Emily frowned.

"I'll wait."

Those two words struck everyone in the room harder than any accusation.

When the visit ended, Emily hugged her mother one last time.

"Will I see you again?"

Vanessa kissed the top of her daughter's head.

"I hope so."

"I'll be good."

Vanessa shook her head.

"This isn't because of you."

Emily smiled innocently.

"I know."

Then she whispered something only Vanessa could hear.

"I already forgave you."

Vanessa froze.

She watched her daughter walk toward the door holding Michael's hand.

Just before leaving, Emily turned around and waved.

Vanessa raised a trembling hand in return.

The heavy steel door closed.

The room became silent.

Sarah waited until everyone had left before sitting across from Vanessa.

"You wanted to see her."

Vanessa nodded without looking up.

"I've seen enough."

Sarah opened a new file.

"Then let's finish this."

Vanessa slowly wiped away her tears.

"There are things I never told you."

Sarah clicked her pen.

"I'm listening."

Vanessa took a long breath.

"Lucas isn't acting alone."

Sarah looked up sharply.

"What do you mean?"

"The money..."

Vanessa whispered.

"...never belonged to Lucas."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Whose money was it?"

Vanessa looked toward the small window in the interrogation room.

For the first time since her arrest, genuine fear crossed her face.

"There are people above him."

She swallowed.

"And if they find out I've talked..."

Her voice nearly disappeared.

"They won't come after me."

Sarah leaned forward.

"They'll come after everyone who helped put him in prison."

Including...

"The Harper family."
