Chapter 15

The morning rain washed the streets of the city, a cold and relentless downpour that blurred the skyline into a canvas of gray.

Inside the federal building, the harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting long shadows across the bullpen.

Agent Sarah Collins sat alone at her desk.

Her coffee had gone cold hours ago.

The files from the Harper Foundation case—the Marcus indictments, the offshore ledgers, the wiretap transcripts—were stacked neatly to her left.

It was supposed to be over.

She had called Nathan Harper just last night to deliver the good news.

But something in the final forensic accounting report, delivered at dawn by a junior analyst, had caught her eye.

She ran her finger down the printed spreadsheet, her eyes narrowing at a specific sequence of routing numbers.

"Ramirez," Sarah called out, her voice breaking the quiet hum of the office.

Agent Ramirez stepped out of his cubicle, holding a fresh mug of coffee.

"You're here early, Sarah. Still taking a victory lap?"

"Look at this," she said, tapping the paper aggressively.

Ramirez leaned over, his brow furrowing as he traced the line she indicated.

"Cayman routing. It's one of Marcus's frozen accounts."

"It was supposed to be frozen," Sarah corrected, her tone sharp. "Look at the timestamp."

Ramirez’s eyes widened.

"0300 hours. Last night. After the indictments came down."

"Exactly," Sarah said, leaning back in her chair, a sinking feeling settling in her stomach. "Fifty million dollars was transferred out of a federally frozen account. That requires a dual-authorization override. Marcus has been in solitary confinement since yesterday afternoon."

"Someone on the outside triggered it," Ramirez whispered.

"Not just someone," Sarah said, standing up and grabbing her coat. "Someone with higher clearance in the syndicate than Marcus ever had. Marcus wasn't the architect, Ramirez. He was just the middleman."

"Where are you going?"

"To the Harpers," Sarah replied, her face pale. "We told them they were safe. We told them the network was dismantled."

"Sarah, wait. If there's a bigger player out there, they're going to cover their tracks."

"They aren't running, Ramirez," Sarah said, pausing at the door. "If they have the power to move fifty million dollars under our noses, they aren't afraid of us."

She pushed the heavy glass doors open, stepping out into the cold corridor.

"They're going to want revenge on the people who exposed them."
