The Investigation Begins

The flashing blue lights faded beyond the mansion gates, taking Vanessa with them.

Silence settled over the living room.

For the first time in months, no one was arguing.

No one was pretending.

The blinking security camera remained fixed in the corner, quietly recording a room that suddenly felt much larger than before.

Nathan loosened his tie and sank onto the cream-colored sofa. He looked years older than he had that morning.

Claire stood near the window with her arms folded, watching the patrol cars disappear down the private road.

Neither of them knew what to say.

It was Ethan who finally broke the silence.

"Is it really over?"

Nathan looked at his son.

"I wish I could tell you yes."

Before anyone could speak again, Daniel entered carrying a tablet.

"Sir, Detective Sarah Collins is here."

Nathan nodded.

"Bring her in."

Moments later, a woman in her early forties walked into the mansion. She wore a navy blazer instead of a uniform and carried a leather folder thick with documents.

She introduced herself with a firm handshake.

"I'm Detective Sarah Collins with the Financial Crimes Unit."

Her eyes swept across the room before settling on Nathan.

"I understand you've been the victim of an organized fraud."

Nathan let out a tired breath.

"So it seems."

Sarah opened the folder.

"We've actually been investigating a man named Lucas Reed for nearly eighteen months."

Claire exchanged a glance with Ethan.

"So you already knew about him?"

"We knew pieces of him," Sarah replied. "Not the whole picture."

She spread several photographs across the coffee table.

Different men.

Different cities.

Different luxury homes.

Each photograph showed Lucas standing beside wealthy businessmen.

Sometimes he wore a business suit.

Sometimes casual clothes.

Each image looked like it belonged to a completely different life.

Nathan frowned.

"Who are these people?"

"Victims."

Sarah tapped the first photograph.

"A real estate developer in Miami."

The second.

"A software entrepreneur in Seattle."

The third.

"An investment executive in Dallas."

Finally she looked directly at Nathan.

"And now you."

Ethan stared at the photographs.

"He kept doing the same thing?"

Sarah nodded.

"He never approached the victims himself."

"He used someone else."

"Exactly."

Claire immediately understood.

"Women."

Sarah gave a slow nod.

"Women who could earn trust, create emotional dependence, and eventually introduce investment opportunities."

Nathan felt sick.

"So I wasn't special."

"No."

Sarah's answer wasn't cruel.

It was simply factual.

"You fit a profile."

Nathan leaned back.

"What profile?"

"Successful."

She turned another page.

"Recently divorced or experiencing marital problems."

Claire looked down.

Nathan closed his eyes.

Sarah continued.

"Financially stable."

"Emotionally vulnerable."

"Public enough that your personal life could be researched online."

The room grew quiet.

Everything she said was true.

Sarah slid another document across the table.

"This wasn't only about romance."

Nathan looked at the financial records.

Several wire transfers.

Company names he had never heard before.

Bank accounts in three different countries.

"Eight million dollars," Sarah said.

"That was only your first transfer."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"There were supposed to be more?"

"We believe Lucas planned to convince you to invest nearly fifty million over the next year."

Claire inhaled sharply.

Nathan looked stunned.

"I would've never..."

Sarah interrupted gently.

"Most victims say that."

She folded her hands.

"Fraud doesn't begin with impossible requests."

"It begins with trust."

Ethan remained silent.

His mind replayed every dinner.

Every argument.

Every time Vanessa had smiled at his father.

It all felt rehearsed now.

Sarah turned toward him.

"Ethan."

He looked up.

"I heard you're the one who exposed the fake pregnancy."

"I just... noticed things."

She smiled slightly.

"Sometimes investigations don't begin with detectives."

"They begin with someone asking the right question."

Daniel suddenly cleared his throat.

"Detective."

"What is it?"

"I found something while reviewing today's visitor logs."

He placed another folder on the table.

"The front gate recorded a black SUV leaving the neighborhood twenty-three minutes before Vanessa was arrested."

Sarah examined the photo.

The license plate was partially visible.

The driver's face wasn't.

But one detail stood out.

A distinctive silver ring on the driver's right hand.

Michael, who had remained quietly near the doorway, stepped closer.

His expression changed instantly.

"I know that ring."

Sarah looked up.

"You're certain?"

"I bought it."

Everyone turned toward him.

"It belonged to Lucas."

Nathan frowned.

"How do you know?"

Michael sighed.

"Years ago, before I knew about the affair, Vanessa invited Lucas to our house for dinner."

"He claimed he was just a coworker."

Michael pointed to the image.

"I gave him that ring after he helped me renovate my garage."

His voice turned bitter.

"I thanked the man who was already planning to steal my family."

Sarah carefully slipped the photograph back into her folder.

"This helps."

Nathan looked at her.

"Can you catch him?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she stood and closed the folder.

"We can."

Then her expression hardened.

"But after today..."

She glanced toward the front windows.

"...Lucas knows Vanessa has talked."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Claire frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah's answer came without hesitation.

"It means the most dangerous part of this case..."

She looked directly at Ethan.

"...is only beginning."

Outside the mansion gates, miles away, a black SUV pulled onto the highway.

Behind the wheel, Lucas Reed tossed a disposable phone out the window.

It disappeared into the darkness.

Then he smiled.

"If they want a war," he muttered to himself, "they've just found one."
