Chapter 39 - The First Steps

Months passed in a state of beautiful, uninterrupted peace.
The company thrived under the new, ethical leadership. The stock skyrocketed, and the philanthropic foundations they established saved thousands of lives across the country.
It was a bright, warm Sunday afternoon.
Valeria and Mateo were sitting on a picnic blanket in the massive, manicured gardens of the estate.
Little Leo, now a year old, was holding onto Mateo’s large, calloused fingers.
With a determined, adorable look on his face, the baby let go of Mateo’s hand. He wobbled unsteadily for a second, balancing his tiny weight, and then took his very first, independent step forward.
He took another, and then fell happily into his mother's waiting, loving arms.
