Chapter 6 - Entering the Lion's Den

Diego's family lived in a house in a supposedly affluent, upper-middle-class neighborhood in San Pedro. However, despite their crumbling finances, they behaved as if they were European royalty.
Doña Carmen, my new mother-in-law, was a woman who lived entirely for appearances. She was perfectly willing to drown in high-interest debt just to buy designer bags and host lavish parties at her home, all to show off the phantom achievements of her children.
From the very first day I set foot in that house, Doña Carmen looked me up and down with an undisguised sneer of profound disgust.
"And you say your family left you absolutely nothing?" she asked me during our supposed engagement dinner, pouring herself wine into a cheap crystal glass she swore was imported from Italy.
"Nothing at all, ma'am. I only have my own two hands to work with," I replied with a warm smile, convinced that my humble attitude would win her over.

Doña Carmen snorted loudly, looking at Diego with raw, unfiltered disappointment.
"Good heavens, son. With so many well-educated girls in San Pedro, girls with fathers who own actual businesses, and you bring home a starving stray from the South."
