Chapter 12 - The Crushing Reaction

That night, I went to a boutique and bought a tiny, beautiful pair of newborn shoes. I placed them in a small gift box and handed them to Diego when he finally got home.

He opened the box, stared down at the little white shoes, and fell completely silent. He didn't smile. He didn't pull me into a joyful embrace. Instead, all the color drained from his face, leaving him ashen.

"Are you pregnant?" he asked, his voice flat, carrying an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.

"Yes," I said, tears of joy springing to my eyes, waiting for him to lift me up.

"We are going to be parents, Diego."

He violently rubbed his face, let out a long, heavy sigh, and slumped onto the edge of the bed.

"Valeria, this is not the right time. The money I make is barely enough to cover my mother and Fernanda's expenses. A baby is a massive financial drain. What are we going to do?"
