Chapter 18 - The Unforgivable Blow

I slowly raised my head and looked dead into Doña Carmen's eyes.
"Actually, mother-in-law, the only one lacking education at this table is you," I said loudly.
"It is incredibly tacky to boast of imaginary wealth in a heavily mortgaged house, begging for money from these people."
The table froze.
"Valeria! Shut your mouth and get in the kitchen!" Diego roared.
"What did you just say, you insolent brat?" Carmen shrieked, her face twisting in rage as she stood up.
"The only ungrateful one is Fernanda, drowning in credit card debt that I pay for," I shot back.
Carmen lost her mind. Blinded by rage and public humiliation, she lunged at me. I tried to stand, but with my heavy six-month belly, I was too slow.
"Get out of my house!" she roared, raising her hand and punching me directly in my pregnant stomach.

I gasped in agony. As I stumbled backward, Fernanda shoved my shoulder brutally. I lost my balance. A sickening crack echoed as my hip slammed violently against the thick edge of the mahogany table. I screamed, clutching my belly in absolute terror. Diego didn't move a single muscle.
"Serves you right, you low-class maid!" Carmen spat.
