Chapter 37 - The Ghost in the Mail

The following morning, Valeria was in her private home office, reviewing charity proposals while Alejandro played happily with a set of wooden blocks on the plush rug.
Her personal assistant walked in, looking slightly uncomfortable, holding a cheap, brown envelope.
"I apologize for the interruption, Ms. Villalobos,"
The assistant said, placing the envelope on the mahogany desk.
"The security screening team flagged this. It arrived in the general mail, routed through a public defender's office. It is from the state penitentiary in Nuevo León."
Valeria looked down at the return address. It was from Diego.
Her heart did not race. Her hands did not tremble. She felt absolutely nothing but a mild, clinical annoyance.
"Shall I run it through the shredder?"
The assistant asked, ready to dispose of the trash.
"No,"
Valeria said smoothly.
She picked up the unopened envelope, walked over to the modern gas fireplace built into the wall, and clicked the ignition. The flames roared to life.
She tossed the envelope directly into the fire, watching as the cheap paper curled, blackened, and turned to ash in a matter of seconds. She didn't need to read his pathetic apologies or his desperate begging. He was dead to her.

"Make sure the mail room updates their filters. I don't want any more trash slipping through,"
Valeria instructed calmly, returning to her desk.
