Chapter 5 - The Modest Wedding

I returned to Monterrey, determined to prove my mother wrong. I married Diego at a small, unglamorous civil registry office.
It was a tiny ceremony. I had no family there, only a few university friends and his immediate family. Diego wore a rented suit, and I wore a simple white dress I had bought off the rack.
When we signed the marriage certificate, I looked at Diego, expecting to see overwhelming joy. Instead, there was a strange tightness in his jaw.
"Are you happy?" I asked him softly as we walked out into the sunlight.
"Of course," he replied, though his smile didn't quite reach his eyes.

I brushed off the comment, assuming he was just stressed about our future finances. That was my first monumental mistake. I had handed my life over to a man who viewed me not as a partner, but as an asset to be managed.
