Chapter 15 - The Whisper in the Laundry Room

"Yes, because you are useless," Doña Carmen immediately interjected from the living room.
"But remember this: Margarita's salary will be paid out of your pocket. You're paying for your own laziness."
I was about to argue, but a sharp pain in my abdomen made me double over. Instantly, strong hands supported me.
"Come here, Miss Valeria. You need to sit," Margarita said warmly, guiding me to a chair.
She looked at my belly, then at my face, her jaw clenching as Doña Carmen's laughter echoed from the other room.
"Drink slowly," Margarita whispered.
"Do not let these women harm the baby. You are stronger than you think. And everything... everything will be resolved very soon."
One afternoon, I came home early and heard Margarita on the phone in the laundry room. Her tone was entirely different. It was elegant, commanding, and chilling.
"I don't care what the lawyers say. I want to buy out the deed to this land today. And investigate my son-in-law's accounts. I will not intervene until Valeria sees their true nature for herself."

I stepped back and bumped into a chair. Margarita hung up and stepped out. I stared at her dyed hair, the thick glasses, the baggy clothes. But the eyes were unmistakable.
"Mother?" I whispered, shaking.
