Chapter 9 - The Indictment

The following Tuesday, the grand jury convened. Marcus Reed had moved with terrifying speed, bypassing the usual bureaucratic delays by leveraging his connections in the District Attorney's office. He presented the medical records, the drafted custody petition, and, most importantly, the hidden camera footage.

The grand jury took less than twenty minutes to return a true bill of indictment.

Evelyn Whitmore was formally charged with felony child endangerment, reckless conduct, and theft of medical property.

The news broke at 4:00 PM. Maya and Ryan were sitting in Marcus’s office when the first alerts hit their phones. The local news stations interrupted their afternoon broadcasts to announce the indictment of one of the city’s most prominent philanthropists.

Marcus turned on the large television mounted on the wall. A news anchor was standing outside the county courthouse, looking gravely into the camera.

“...sources confirm that Evelyn Whitmore, chairwoman of the Whitmore Foundation, surrendered to authorities an hour ago. The charges stem from a domestic incident involving her infant grandson. While details remain sealed, legal experts are calling the felony charges unprecedented for someone of Whitmore’s standing.”

Ryan watched the screen as footage of his mother, wearing a dark trench coat and oversized sunglasses, was escorted into the police precinct by her attorneys. She looked pale, her trademark arrogant posture finally slipping under the flashing lights of the paparazzi.

“Her PR team is already trying to spin it,” Marcus noted, scrolling through his tablet. “They are claiming this is a tragic family misunderstanding exacerbated by the stress of a sick child. They are trying to garner public sympathy.”

“Will it work?” Maya asked, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“Normally, yes. Wealth buys a lot of reasonable doubt,” Marcus replied, looking directly at Maya. “But they don't know we have the video. They think the only evidence is your testimony against hers. Evelyn is going to walk into that courtroom believing she can charm the jury into seeing you as an hysterical mother.”

Marcus offered a slow, predatory grin. “We are going to let her dig her own grave. We won't release the footage to the press. We will save it for the trial. When she lies under oath, we will play the tape, and we will destroy her.”
