Chapter 30 - The Digital Paper Trail
When the court reconvened for the afternoon session, the defense was visibly scrambling. Arthur Sterling had spent the entire recess attempting to draft a motion to strike Clara’s emotional testimony from the record, citing it as highly prejudicial. Marcus Reed didn't even wait for the judge to rule on it; he immediately pivoted to the undeniable, cold hard facts of the case.
"Your Honor, the defense claims that Clara is fabricating this story of extortion," Marcus stated, walking to the evidence table and holding up a highly encrypted, solid-state hard drive. "We would like to call our next witness, Mr. David Aris, former senior systems architect for Whitmore Holdings."
Sterling jumped to his feet, his face pale. "Objection! This witness was added to the discovery list at the eleventh hour!"
"Because he only came forward after seeing the plaintiff's courage on the local news," Marcus shot back. "The defense has had the requisite forty-eight hours to depose him. They chose not to."
Judge Hawthorne overruled the objection, and a nervous, middle-aged IT specialist took the stand. David Aris explained that it was his job to manage the executive server backups.
"Mr. Aris, can you identify Plaintiff’s Exhibit F?" Marcus asked, projecting a series of highly redacted emails onto the large courtroom monitors.
"Yes, sir," David replied, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Those are internal communications sent from Eleanor Whitmore’s private executive account to the head of corporate security. They were sent on October 14th, the day Clara was detained in the office."

Marcus read the projected text aloud, his voice echoing in the silent room. "'Ensure the medical debt files on the assistant's mother are completely consolidated before you bring her to my office. We need absolute leverage to secure the signature on the NDA. Do not let her leave the building until it is signed.'"
The courtroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Sterling buried his face in his hands. It was the smoking gun. It wasn't just Clara's word against a billionaire's; it was Eleanor Whitmore's own arrogant, documented words proving absolute, premeditated extortion. The myth of the generous severance package was completely annihilated.
