Chapter 12 - Preparation for War

The trial was scheduled to begin in three days. Maya spent her mornings at Marcus’s office, preparing for cross-examination. She had to relive that terrible night over and over again, detailing every gasp Oliver took, every cruel word Evelyn spoke.

It was grueling, exhausting work. The defense was going to attack her character, her mental health, and her memory of the event. They were going to try to confuse the timeline and make the jury believe Maya had misplaced the inhaler herself.

On the final night of preparation, Maya sat on the sofa in their newly empty nursery, holding a sleeping Oliver against her chest. Ryan walked in, carrying two mugs of tea. He set them down and sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

“You don't have to testify, you know,” Ryan said softly, kissing the top of her head. “Marcus said the video is enough to convict her. You don't have to sit on that stand and let her lawyer tear into you.”

Maya looked down at Oliver’s peaceful, healthy face. The wheezing was gone, replaced by the soft, rhythmic breathing of a safe, loved child.

“I do have to testify, Ryan,” Maya said, her voice completely steady. “For a year, your mother made me feel like a ghost in my own home. She made me feel small, incompetent, and crazy. If I don't get on that stand and speak my truth, she still holds power over me.”

Ryan looked at her, absolute awe and deep respect in his eyes. The exhausted, terrified woman he had seen in the hospital was gone. In her place was a fierce, protective mother who had walked through the fire and emerged unbreakable.

“She wants to paint me as a weak, hysterical girl,” Maya continued, looking up into Ryan’s eyes. “I am going to show the jury exactly what a mother looks like when she is fighting for her child’s life. I am going to look her in the eye and take my power back.”

Ryan smiled, pulling her close. “She has no idea what’s coming.”
