Chapter 32 - The Cross-Examination

Arthur Sterling knew that his case was rapidly disintegrating, and his only remaining strategy was to attempt to destroy Clara’s credibility during cross-examination. When Clara returned to the stand, Sterling approached her like a predator circling a wounded bird. He needed to make her look unstable, greedy, or both.
"Ms. Clara, you claim you were terrified for your life and your family's financial security," Sterling began, his voice dripping with condescension. "Yet, records show that two years after you left Whitmore Holdings, you purchased a new vehicle. You took a vacation to Mexico. That doesn't sound like a woman crushed by financial ruin. That sounds like a woman enjoying the massive severance package she willingly accepted."
Clara gripped the edges of the witness stand, her knuckles turning white. Sterling continued his aggressive barrage, twisting her words, interrupting her answers, and attempting to confuse her timeline. He was trying to induce a panic attack right there in front of the jury.
Maya leaned forward in the gallery, her heart pounding. She caught Clara’s eye across the courtroom and offered a slow, deliberate nod. Breathe, Maya mouthed silently. Remember who you are.
Clara saw Maya, took a deep breath, and her posture suddenly straightened. The fragile girl vanished, replaced by a woman who had survived the worst and was completely done apologizing for it.

"I bought a used car so I could drive my mother to her chemotherapy appointments, Mr. Sterling," Clara stated, her voice suddenly ringing with absolute clarity and defiance. "And I went to Mexico to spread her ashes after the cancer finally killed her. I used the severance money because I had no other choice to keep my family alive. Taking their blood money to survive does not mean I consented to their abuse. It means I did what I had to do to survive a hostage situation."
Sterling stood frozen, his aggressive strategy completely backfiring. The jury wasn't looking at Clara with suspicion; they were looking at Sterling with absolute, unadulterated disgust. He had tried to break her, but he had only succeeded in proving her undeniable humanity. Defeated, Sterling muttered, "No further questions," and practically retreated to his chair.
