Chapter 17 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than two hours. It was one of the fastest verdicts in the history of the county court.
The courtroom was suffocatingly tense as the jury foreperson stood up to read the decision. Maya held Ryan’s hand under the table, her fingers gripping his so tightly her knuckles were white. Ryan didn't look at his mother; he looked only at his wife, anchoring her in the moment.
“Has the jury reached a verdict?” the judge asked, his voice echoing in the silent room.
“We have, Your Honor,” the foreperson, an older woman with kind eyes, replied.
Evelyn stood up, flanked by her defeated lawyers. She was trembling slightly, but her chin was still stubbornly raised, refusing to accept that consequences applied to her.
“On the charge of felony child endangerment, how do you find?”
“Guilty, Your Honor.”
Evelyn gasped, stepping backward as if she had been physically struck.
“On the charge of reckless conduct?”
“Guilty.”
“On the charge of theft of medical property?”
“Guilty.”
The gavel slammed down. The sound was a definitive, thunderous period at the end of a terrifying chapter. Evelyn Whitmore collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands as the reality of a federal prison sentence crashed over her.
The judge didn't offer any sympathy. “Mrs. Whitmore, your actions display a staggering level of malice and a complete disregard for human life, driven entirely by your own hubris. Bail is revoked. The defendant will be remanded to custody pending sentencing.”
Two bailiffs approached the defense table. They pulled Evelyn to her feet and snapped a pair of cold, steel handcuffs onto her wrists. She looked back toward the gallery, her eyes searching desperately for Ryan.

“Ryan!” she cried out, her voice cracking in true panic. “Ryan, please!”
Ryan stood up. He didn't offer a word of comfort. He simply turned his back on her, placed a protective hand on Maya’s waist, and walked his wife out of the courtroom, leaving Evelyn to face the dark, lonely reality she had built for herself.
