Chapter 13 - The Trial Begins

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. The press had swarmed the building, eager to cover the spectacular downfall of the Whitmore dynasty. The air was thick with tension as the bailiff called the court to order.
Maya sat beside Marcus at the prosecutor's table, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit. Her posture was rigidly straight, her expression unreadable. Ryan sat directly behind her in the first row of the gallery, his eyes locked onto the back of his mother’s head.
Evelyn sat at the defense table, wearing a conservative, understated gray dress. She was attempting to project the image of a frail, misunderstood grandmother, but the hard, arrogant set of her jaw betrayed her true nature.
The prosecuting attorney, a sharp, seasoned woman named Sarah Jenkins, delivered the opening statement.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” Sarah began, her voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom. “This is not a case about a tragic mistake. This is a case about power, control, and absolute malice. You will hear evidence that the defendant, Evelyn Whitmore, systematically attempted to frame her daughter-in-law for medical neglect. And when the opportunity presented itself, she chose to risk the life of her infant grandson to secure the final piece of her fabricated puzzle.”
The defense attorney, a slick, expensive lawyer named Harrison, countered with a narrative of tragedy. “Evelyn Whitmore is a loving grandmother who panicked during a medical emergency. The prosecution will try to paint her as a villain, but what you will see is a family tragedy, blown wildly out of proportion by an emotional, overwhelmed young mother.”

Maya didn't flinch at the insult. She simply stared straight ahead, waiting for her moment. She knew the defense's entire strategy relied on making the jury believe it was Maya's word against Evelyn's.
They were about to learn how wrong they were.
