Chapter 5 - The Dawn of Truth

Morning broke over the city, casting long, pale rays of sunlight through the hospital blinds. Oliver was sleeping soundly, the flush of fever finally leaving his small cheeks. The pediatric pulmonologist, a stern woman named Dr. Aris, entered the room holding a thick medical tablet. She checked Oliver’s vitals before turning to Ryan and Maya.

“He is entirely stabilized,” Dr. Aris said, keeping her voice low. “However, I need to be remarkably clear about what happened last night. Asthma attacks in infants are entirely manageable with immediate intervention. But the delay in administering his prescribed albuterol turned a routine flare-up into a life-threatening crisis.”

Ryan’s jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked visibly. “How close was it?”

“Too close,” Dr. Aris replied bluntly. “If his airway had inflamed for another fifteen minutes, we would have had to intubate. Ms. Whitmore, you did the right thing calling the paramedics when you did.”

Maya nodded, a fresh wave of tears prickling her eyes. It wasn't relief; it was the terrifying validation of her instincts. Evelyn had stood there, watching her grandson gasp for air, holding the medicine hostage just to build a legal case against Maya.

After the doctor left, Ryan’s phone began to vibrate violently on the small table. He picked it up. The screen flashed with his mother’s name. Evelyn had spent the night in a holding cell, but her high-priced lawyers had undoubtedly secured her release by dawn.

Ryan stared at the screen, a dark, chilling fire igniting in his eyes. He didn't decline the call. He answered it and put it on speaker, placing the phone on the tray table so Maya could hear.

“Ryan, darling,” Evelyn’s voice floated through the speaker, crisp, annoyed, and entirely devoid of remorse. “This entire misunderstanding has gotten completely out of hand. My attorney is arranging a press blackout. I expect you to have Maya drop these ridiculous charges immediately before she embarrasses the family further.”

Ryan looked at Maya. She sat perfectly still, holding Oliver’s hand.

“You don't have a family anymore, Evelyn,” Ryan said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing authority. “You have a defense attorney. You are going to need him. Do not ever call this number again.” He ended the call, blocking the number instantly. The war had officially begun.
