Chapter 29 - The Hallway Ambush

The judge called for a mandatory two-hour lunch recess immediately following Clara’s devastating direct testimony. The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open, and the gallery spilled out into the sprawling marble hallway. Maya and Ryan hung back, allowing Clara to be escorted to a private secure room by Marcus’s paralegals.

As they walked toward the elevators, the temperature in the corridor seemed to drop ten degrees. Standing near the massive stone pillars, flanked by two expensive, silent security contractors, was Eleanor Whitmore. Ryan’s mother looked immaculate, wearing her signature string of South Sea pearls and a perfectly tailored designer suit. Her face was a mask of cold, terrifying aristocratic fury.

Eleanor stepped directly into their path, completely ignoring Maya and locking her icy gaze entirely on her son.

"This is a spectacular performance, Ryan," Eleanor hissed, her voice low enough to avoid the lingering press, but sharp enough to draw blood. "Are you proud of yourself? Dragging your own legacy through the mud for a pathetic, lying former secretary? You are destroying the empire that built you."

Ryan did not flinch. Years ago, the mere sound of his mother’s voice would have triggered a suffocating wave of anxiety and submission. Today, he looked at her with nothing but profound, clinical pity.

"You destroyed it yourself, Mother, the moment you decided that other people’s lives were just commodities you could trade," Ryan replied, his voice steady and completely devoid of fear. "I am not a part of your legacy anymore. My legacy is sleeping safely in a crib across town, miles away from your poison."

Eleanor’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath. She turned her venomous glare toward Maya. "You did this. You poisoned my son against his own blood. You will pay for this public humiliation, Maya. I will ensure you never have a moment of peace."

Maya stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she was inches from Eleanor’s face. "Your threats don't work in the light, Eleanor. We aren't hiding in your mansion anymore. We are in a federal courthouse, and you are losing. Keep away from my family, or I swear to God, I will put you in a prison cell myself."
