Chapter 6 - The Whitmore Machine

By noon, the Whitmore family PR machine was running at full capacity. Evelyn had not built a multi-million-dollar philanthropic foundation by being easily intimidated. She viewed the events of the previous night not as a crime, but as a strategic inconvenience.
Maya sat in the hospital cafeteria, forcing herself to drink a cup of black coffee while Ryan paced the floor, listening to a voicemail from Evelyn’s lead counsel. The lawyer was a legendary corporate shark who specialized in burying scandals before they reached the courtroom.
Ryan replayed the message for Maya. The lawyer’s voice was smooth and threatening. “Ryan, we need to handle this internally. If your wife proceeds with these criminal allegations, we will be forced to release the medical evaluations Evelyn gathered. We will paint Maya as a severely depressed, unstable mother suffering from postpartum psychosis. We will protect Evelyn’s reputation at all costs. Think about your son’s future. Call me.”
Maya gripped her coffee cup until her knuckles turned white. “They are going to use my therapy records. The ones your mother insisted I attend with her ‘recommended’ doctor.”
Ryan stopped pacing. “Dr. Sterling. The one who diagnosed you with severe anxiety and suggested you needed residential care.”
“It was all a setup,” Maya whispered, the sheer scale of Evelyn’s manipulation crashing down on her. “She wasn't trying to help me with my postpartum depression. She was building a medical dossier to prove I was legally incompetent.”
“She overplayed her hand,” Ryan said, sitting across from her. He reached out and covered her trembling hands with his own. “Evelyn thinks because she has money and influence, she controls the narrative. But she forgot one critical detail.”
Maya looked up, her eyes wide. “What?”
“The camera,” Ryan stated flatly. “The hidden camera she installed in the nursery to catch you having a breakdown. She installed it on our secure home network. Which means the footage didn't upload to her phone. It uploaded to our central server.”

Maya’s breath hitched. “We have it? We have the recording of what she did?”
Ryan nodded, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. “I had our tech team pull the encrypted drive this morning. We have every single second. The Whitmore machine is about to drive straight off a cliff.”
