Chapter 16 - The Arrogance of Evelyn

Despite the devastating video evidence, Evelyn Whitmore’s arrogance proved to be her ultimate downfall. Against the desperate advice of her legal team, she insisted on taking the stand the next morning to testify in her own defense. She believed she could charm the jury, explain away the footage, and assert her dominance one last time.

She walked to the witness box wearing her finest pearls, lifting her chin with a defiant glare.

Her lawyer, Harrison, tried to gently guide her through a narrative of confusion. “Evelyn, on the video, we saw you put the inhaler in your bag. Can you explain why?”

“It was an accident,” Evelyn stated, her voice tight. “I was attempting to clean up the messy room. I simply picked it up without thinking. Maya was screaming, the baby was crying, it was absolute chaos.”

Sarah Jenkins stood up for cross-examination, her eyes sharp and merciless. “You picked it up without thinking, Mrs. Whitmore? A bright blue medical device, while your grandson was actively having an asthma attack?”

“I was distracted!” Evelyn snapped, her composure slipping.

“You weren't distracted,” Sarah countered, walking toward the jury box. “You were focused. You drafted a custody petition that very afternoon. You had already written a press release. You wanted Maya to fail so you could take that child.”

“Maya is unfit!” Evelyn suddenly yelled, slamming her hand against the wooden rail of the witness box. Her mask completely shattered, revealing the vicious, classist monster beneath. “She is a weak, common girl who trapped my son! She has no business raising a Whitmore! I was protecting my legacy! I was doing what had to be done to save my family from her mediocrity!”

The courtroom erupted. The judge banged his gavel repeatedly, demanding order.

Ryan sat in the gallery, watching his mother destroy herself. She hadn't just admitted to her prejudice; she had admitted to her motive. She had justified risking an infant’s life because she believed her social standing gave her the right to play god.

Sarah Jenkins simply nodded, looking at the horrified faces of the jury. “No further questions, Your Honor. The witness has made her intentions perfectly clear.”
