Chapter 14 - Maya’s Stand

On the second day of the trial, the prosecution called their star witness.
“The State calls Maya Whitmore to the stand,” Sarah Jenkins announced.
Maya stood up, her heart hammering against her ribs. She walked to the witness box, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth. She sat down, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly at the jury.
Sarah walked the floor, gently walking Maya through the events of that night. Maya described the sudden onset of Oliver’s asthma attack, the desperate search for the inhaler, and the terror of realizing it was missing.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” Sarah asked gently. “Can you describe the defendant's demeanor while your son was struggling to breathe?”
“She was completely calm,” Maya answered, her voice clear and strong. “She stood in the doorway and told me I was being dramatic. She told me to stop panicking.”
“Did she offer to help? Did she call 911?”
“No. I called 911 while she watched me.”
Harrison, the defense attorney, stood up for cross-examination, smelling blood. He approached the podium with a condescending smile.
“Mrs. Whitmore, isn't it true that you had been suffering from severe anxiety in the months leading up to this event?” Harrison asked, his tone dripping with fake sympathy. “Isn't it possible that in your frantic, sleep-deprived state, you simply misplaced the inhaler yourself and blamed my client out of sheer panic?”
“No,” Maya said firmly.
“Come now,” Harrison pressed. “You were overwhelmed. You were disorganized. You had a folder full of medical evaluations suggesting you were unstable. You lost the medicine, didn't you?”
Maya leaned forward, her eyes locking onto Evelyn’s across the room. “I didn't lose the medicine, Mr. Harrison. Evelyn stole it. Because she wanted me to look exactly the way you are describing me right now.”

Harrison chuckled dismissively. “A wild accusation with absolutely no proof. Just the hysterical claims of an unfit mother.”
Maya didn't break eye contact with Evelyn. “I don't need claims. I have the tape.”
