Chapter 15 - The Turning Point

Harrison froze at the podium. The condescending smile vanished from his face. “Excuse me? What tape?”
Sarah Jenkins stood up. “Your Honor, at this time, the State would like to enter Exhibit C into evidence. It is a digital recording captured by a security camera located in the nursery on the night in question.”
Evelyn’s head snapped toward her lawyer, absolute panic finally breaking through her carefully constructed facade. Harrison scrambled to object, demanding to review the evidence, claiming it was inadmissible. But Marcus had ensured the chain of custody was flawless, and the judge overruled every frantic objection.
The lights in the courtroom dimmed. A large screen descended behind the witness stand.
The video began to play in stark, high-definition color.
The jury watched as Maya frantically searched the drawers. They heard the terrifying, ragged sound of Oliver wheezing. And then, they watched as Evelyn Whitmore calmly walked into the frame. They watched as she slipped her hand onto the nightstand, picked up the bright blue inhaler, and dropped it into her designer handbag.
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. One of the jurors covered her mouth in sheer horror.
The video continued. The jury listened to Evelyn’s cold, mocking voice telling Maya she was dramatic, while Oliver struggled for his life in the background. They watched a grandmother actively, knowingly endanger a child solely to break its mother.
When the lights came back on, the courtroom was in absolute, stunned silence.

Harrison stood at the podium, pale and sweating. He had no defense for what the jury had just seen. He looked at Evelyn, who was staring at the blank screen with wide, terrified eyes, realizing her empire had just burned to the ground.
“No further questions, Your Honor,” Harrison mumbled, sitting down heavily. Maya stepped down from the stand, her head held high. She had won.
