Chapter 11 - The Unraveling Matriarch

Evelyn Whitmore sat in the drawing room of her massive, empty estate, a glass of expensive scotch trembling in her hand. The silence of the house was deafening.

For the past week, her world had been systematically dismantled. Her society friends had stopped returning her calls. The board of the Whitmore Foundation had placed her on an "indefinite leave of absence" pending the trial. And now, her defense attorney had just called to inform her that Dr. Sterling was suddenly unavailable to testify, refusing to return their calls.

Evelyn threw the crystal glass against the fireplace, shattering it into a hundred pieces.

She could not comprehend how it had gone so wrong. She had planned everything perfectly. Maya was weak, common, and utterly unsuited for the Whitmore name. Evelyn had only done what was necessary to protect her grandson and preserve the family legacy. It was Ryan’s fault. Ryan was supposed to fall in line. He was supposed to see the custody petition, recognize Maya’s incompetence, and hand the child over to his mother.

Instead, Ryan had chosen the girl with the exhausted eyes and the middle-class background.

Evelyn picked up her phone. She bypassed her legal team's strict orders not to communicate with the plaintiffs and dialed Ryan’s direct number. It went straight to voicemail. She dialed again.

On the fourth try, he answered.

“What do you want, Evelyn?” Ryan’s voice was cold, completely devoid of the deference he had shown her for thirty years.

“Ryan, please,” Evelyn said, attempting to inject a tone of maternal heartbreak into her voice. “This has gone far enough. I am losing everything. The Foundation, my reputation. Over a misunderstanding. You know I love Oliver. I would never hurt him.”

“You watched him turn blue, Mother,” Ryan stated, the word 'Mother' sounding like a curse.

“I panicked! I made a mistake!” Evelyn cried out, her desperation finally genuine.

“You drafted a press release,” Ryan replied, his logic slicing through her emotional manipulation. “You don't draft a press release in a panic. You planned to steal my son and destroy my wife. You are going to face a jury, Evelyn. And I am going to sit in the front row and watch them take you away in handcuffs.”

The line went dead. Evelyn stared at her phone, the cold, terrifying realization finally sinking in. She had not just lost her grandson. She had lost her son entirely.
