Chapter 20 - The Cold Wall

It had been exactly fourteen months since the heavy, unforgiving steel doors of the federal penitentiary had closed behind Evelyn Whitmore. For over a year, Ryan had systematically ignored every letter, every formal request for visitation, and every pathetic message relayed through her remaining, lower-tier attorneys. He had built an impenetrable fortress around his family, and he had zero intention of letting a ghost breach the walls.
But when a certified letter arrived from the warden stating it would be Evelyn’s final request before she was permanently transferred to a maximum-security facility three states away, Ryan made a decision. He didn't tell Maya until he was already dressed in his suit. He wasn't going for reconciliation; he was going to sever the final, lingering thread of his past.
He sat in the sterile, heavily guarded visitation room, a thick pane of reinforced glass separating the prisoners from the outside world. When Evelyn was finally led in by a corrections officer, Ryan felt a profound, echoing emptiness. The terrifying matriarch of the Whitmore empire was gone. She wore a faded, standard-issue orange jumpsuit. Her hair, once perfectly dyed and styled, was growing out in patches of brittle gray. Her posture was slightly hunched, the arrogance beaten down by the daily reality of incarceration.
She sat down and picked up the heavy black receiver.
"You came," Evelyn said, her voice attempting that familiar, commanding tone, but it fell completely flat against the glass.
"I came to tell you to stop writing, Evelyn," Ryan said, his voice cold and entirely devoid of affection. "Every letter you send goes directly into a paper shredder. Maya doesn't even see the envelopes, and Oliver doesn't know your name."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, a flash of the old, toxic malice returning to her face. "She has poisoned you against your own blood, Ryan. You are a Whitmore. You belong with your family, not with that common, ungrateful girl who ruined my life."
Ryan shook his head slowly, feeling only pity for the woman sitting across from him. "You still don't understand, do you? Maya didn't poison me against anyone. She saved me. She saved me from becoming exactly like you—hollow, cruel, obsessed with optics, and entirely alone in the world."
"I protected this family!" Evelyn hissed, hitting her palm aggressively against the thick glass. "I did what had to be done to ensure Oliver’s future! You were too weak to do it yourself!"

"You almost killed my son," Ryan stated, his voice dropping to a dangerous, uncompromising whisper. "You traded a child's breath for your own narcissistic ego. You are not my family. You are nothing more than a cautionary tale."
He hung up the phone before she could respond, severing the connection. He stood up, adjusted his jacket, and walked toward the heavy steel exit doors. He didn't look back, even as he heard the muffled sound of Evelyn pounding on the reinforced glass, screaming his name into a room that no longer cared.
