Chapter 6 - The Calm Before the Storm

Inside the nursery, the atmosphere remained tranquil, quiet, and completely undisturbed by the desperate race occurring just outside its doors.
Victoria leaned delicately over the edge of the gilded crib. A gentle, radiantly beautiful smile touched her lips as she watched her son’s tiny chest rise and fall in a peaceful rhythm. The expensive gold silk of her robe brushed softly against the wooden slats of the crib.
She unscrewed the cap of the crystal baby bottle just a fraction to test a single drop of the milk against the sensitive skin of her wrist. It was perfectly warm. She was completely, utterly unaware of the lethal, unseen danger resting comfortably in the palm of her hand.
Everything in her world was perfect in this singular moment.
"Wake up, my sweet boy,"
Victoria whispered softly, her voice filled with an overflowing, boundless love.

She adjusted her gentle grip on the glass bottle and slowly, lovingly lowered her arm, guiding the silicone nipple down toward the infant’s slightly parted lips.
