Chapter 40 - The Apex Predator

The golden sanctuary of the nursery was bathed in the warm, inviting light of the late afternoon sun. The oppressive, dramatic tension that had shattered the room months ago was completely gone.
Victoria sat in a plush velvet armchair near the bay window. She held her son against her chest, supporting his head with a gentle, precise hand. He was awake, his bright, innocent eyes looking up at his mother.
Victoria’s facial expression was entirely relaxed. The sharp, cold angles of her jaw had softened into a profound, deeply gentle warmth. She slowly stroked his soft hair, her natural breathing perfectly synchronized with the peaceful atmosphere of the room.
The door to the nursery opened silently. Marcus stepped in, stopping a respectful distance away.
"Madam," Marcus murmured, his voice a low, unobtrusive whisper. "The perimeter is secure. The markets are closed. The empire is completely stable."
Victoria did not look up from her son immediately. She offered a microscopic nod of acknowledgment.
"Thank you, Marcus. That will be all."
Marcus bowed his head and exited, leaving the door cracked open just an inch—a silent promise of perpetual vigilance.
Victoria slowly raised her head. The cinematic camera zoomed in tightly on her dark eyes. The gentle warmth vanished in a microscopic fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, protective, absolute sovereignty. She was no longer a victim. She was the apex predator, the architect of a flawless, untouchable fortress.

"No one will ever hurt us," Victoria whispered into the quiet room, her baritone-soft voice sealing the unbreakable vow. The screen faded to black, leaving behind the lingering, terrifying feeling of absolute safety.
