Back in the sprawling estate, the midnight shadows stretched across the walls of Evelyn’s former private study. Victoria stood in front of the massive oil painting that concealed the wall safe. The biometric lock had been forcibly overridden by Marcus earlier that evening.
Victoria did not rush. She slowly opened the heavy steel door. Inside, among the stacks of offshore bearer bonds and encrypted hard drives, sat a single, worn leather ledger.
She carried the ledger to the mahogany desk, turning on the brass reading lamp. The high-contrast lighting cast sharp, deliberate shadows across her cheekbones. She opened the book. The pages were filled with Evelyn’s elegant, aggressive handwriting, detailing decades of corporate blackmail, sabotage, and political manipulation.
But it was the final few pages that caused Victoria’s natural breathing to pause for a fraction of a second.
The entry was titled Protocol: Bloodline. It detailed the horrific conspiracy Victoria had uncovered in the nursery. However, the ledger revealed a devastating new layer. Evelyn had not acted alone. The forged medical documents and the private doctors were funded and supplied by a shadow syndicate referred to only as the Archon Group—a coalition of elite, purist investors who demanded absolute genetic perfection from the families controlling their assets.
