Chapter 26 - The Dead Line

In the freezing isolation of the Maine coastline, Evelyn sat wrapped in a heavy blanket. The wind howled against the reinforced glass, rattling the frames of the brutalist house. She had spent a week in absolute silence, the psychological weight of her exile slowly driving her toward madness.

She reached into the lining of her luxury suitcase, her trembling fingers extracting a small, encrypted burner phone. She had hidden it years ago for a catastrophic emergency.

Her eye movement was desperate as she powered the device on. She intended to call a senior contact within the Archon Group—a man who owed her decades of favors. She would beg for a private extraction. She would offer them whatever secrets Victoria had not yet uncovered.

Evelyn dialed the twelve-digit international number. The phone emitted a series of low, digital clicks as the encryption routed the call.

The line connected.

"Evelyn," a voice echoed through the small speaker.

Evelyn froze. The heavy phone nearly slipped from her grasp. The voice did not belong to the Archon executive. The baritone, chillingly calm voice belonged to Marcus.

"How..." Evelyn stuttered, a microscopic spasm of pure terror crossing her wrinkled face.

"Miss Victoria anticipated you might have retained unauthorized communication devices," Marcus stated smoothly, the cinematic realism of his indifference absolutely devastating. "Every cell tower within a fifty-mile radius of your location has been hijacked by our private security network. Every call you attempt to make is routed directly to my desk."

Evelyn’s chest heaved. A quiet, pathetic whimper escaped her lips.

"You are a ghost, Evelyn," Marcus whispered, the finality in his voice ringing like a death knell. "Stop trying to haunt the living."

The line went dead. Evelyn stared at the black screen of the phone, weeping in absolute, crushing silence, completely trapped in her frozen cage.
