Noticing the maid's intense, focused gesture toward the door, Victoria slowly, mechanically turned her head.
She saw her own mother standing in the shadows, weeping silently.
She instantly connected the presence of the matriarch in the hallway with the vicious, bubbling chemical foam eating into the floorboards. She remembered the coldness of her mother, the veiled threats about the baby complicating the corporate trust.
