Chapter 22 - The Coastal Prison

Three hundred miles away, the freezing, relentless waves of the Atlantic Ocean crashed against the jagged rocks of the Maine coastline. The isolated, brutalist stone house sat on a solitary cliff, completely cut off from the world. The interior was sparse, decorated in cold, muted tones that absorbed the weak gray sunlight filtering through the reinforced windows.

Evelyn stood in the center of the living room. She wore a heavy cashmere sweater, a stark contrast to the immaculate power suits that had defined her entire existence. There was no boardroom here. There were no assistants to command. The deafening, suffocating silence of the house pressed against her eardrums.

Her eye movement was slow, hollow, and devastated. She walked toward the bare wooden dresser near the window. Resting on the surface were her heavy, flawless diamond rings. Without the empire to back them, the jewels looked entirely meaningless—cheap stones resting on dead wood.

Evelyn reached out, her fingers hovering over the diamonds. A microscopic tremor shook her hand. The cinematic camera would focus tightly on her facial micro-expressions: the slight, pathetic quivering of her lower lip, the deep, dark bags forming beneath her eyes. The crushing, agonizing regret of the nursery replayed in an endless, torturous loop in her mind.

She had tried to orchestrate the clinical erasure of her own grandson to protect a corporate legacy. Now, that legacy had violently excised her. She was a queen exiled to a frozen tomb. Evelyn slowly lowered her hand, leaving the rings untouched. She turned to stare out at the gray, churning ocean, weeping in absolute, crushing silence, completely paralyzed by the terrifying realization that she would die entirely alone.
