Chapter 19 - The Heartbreaking Question

Victoria’s legs grew impossibly weak. The elegant gold silk robe suddenly felt like it was woven from heavy lead, dragging her down into an abyss of despair.
She stared at the woman who had given her life, the woman she had trusted and obeyed above all others her entire life.
Her voice, usually strong, articulate, and commanding, was reduced to a fragile, broken, trembling thread of sound.
"Mother?"
Victoria asked, her voice shaking violently, tears blurring her vision.

It was a question asked not out of a need for an answer, but out of a completely shattered heart. She was standing directly on the precipice of a terribly guilty, undeniable suspicion, begging the universe for it to be a lie.
