Chapter 4 - The Agony of Choice
Rosa’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped, panicked bird.
She stood in the massive kitchen, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of what she had just witnessed. She knew the ruthless, violent reputation of the matriarch. Evelyn was a woman who could destroy a person's entire life with a single phone call. Rosa knew that speaking out, or interfering with the family's dark affairs, could cost her not just her livelihood, but her very life.
But then, the image of the innocent, sleeping baby flashed vividly in her mind. She thought of his tiny hands, his helpless cries.

Rosa dropped the expensive silver polishing cloth directly onto the marble counter. She did not think about the consequences. She did not care about the wealth or the power of the woman she was about to defy. Driven by a pure, desperate surge of adrenaline, Rosa sprinted out of the kitchen, abandoning her post.
