Chapter 22 - The Confrontation

Daniel returned to Boston that evening.

When he walked into his living room, he stopped dead in his tracks. Eleanor was sitting on the sofa across from Olivia. The journal in Daniel's briefcase suddenly felt like a heavy stone.

"Daniel,"

Eleanor said, standing up slowly.

"Don't,"

Daniel said sharply, holding up a hand.

"I read the journal on the flight. I know who you are. I know what you did."

"I did it to save you,"

Eleanor pleaded, stepping forward.

"You abandoned me,"

Daniel countered, his voice thick with decades of unresolved pain.

"Michael Carter is my father. He is the one who stayed when I was crying in the dark."

"I know,"

Eleanor nodded, tears finally falling.

"And I thank God every day that he did. I didn't come here to take his place. I came here to warn you."
