Chapter 2 — The Camera She Never Escaped

The ambulance arrived in less than six minutes.
To Daniel, it felt like six hours.
Two paramedics rushed through the front door carrying emergency bags and a stretcher. One immediately knelt beside Olivia while the other checked her blood pressure and fetal heart monitors.
"Thirty-four weeks with twins?" the senior paramedic asked.
Daniel nodded.
"She was assaulted. She fell into labor."
Olivia cried out as another contraction hit. Sweat covered her forehead, and her breathing became shallow.
"We need to move now," the paramedic said. "Baby A's heart rate is dropping."
The words struck Daniel harder than any punch ever could.
Dropping.
Not stable.
Not okay.
Vanessa stepped forward with tears suddenly streaming down her face.
"I've been trying to help her," she sobbed dramatically. "She slipped, and I couldn't stop her."
The younger paramedic glanced at Olivia's bruised face.
Then at the fingerprints already darkening around her wrist.
Then at the torn clumps of blonde hair scattered across the hardwood floor.
His expression hardened.
He quietly asked Olivia, "Ma'am... did someone hurt you?"
Olivia struggled to answer between contractions.
"She... hit me..."
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"She's confused! She's in shock!"
Olivia forced herself to raise one trembling hand.
She pointed directly at Vanessa.
"She... punched... my stomach..."
Silence.
The paramedics exchanged a quick look.
One reached for his radio.
"We need law enforcement responding to the hospital. Possible domestic assault involving a pregnant patient."
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"Wait—that's ridiculous!"
Nobody answered her.
The stretcher rolled toward the ambulance.
Daniel climbed inside beside Olivia, refusing to let go of her hand.
As the doors slammed shut, he looked back one last time.
Vanessa stood alone in the driveway.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She was staring at the shattered security camera lying in pieces near the front entrance.
A slow smile appeared on her face.
She actually believed she had erased the evidence.
Mercy Memorial Hospital erupted into controlled chaos the moment the ambulance arrived.
Doctors surrounded Olivia before the wheels of the stretcher had stopped moving.
"Emergency C-section team!"
"NICU on standby!"
"Possible placental abruption!"
Daniel tried to follow, but a nurse gently blocked him.
"We'll take care of her."
The operating room doors closed.
The red surgical light switched on.
Then came the waiting.
Minutes stretched endlessly.
Daniel sat alone in the empty hallway, still wearing Olivia's blood on his shirt.
His phone buzzed.
It was the home security company.
Automatic Alert:
Device Offline – Hallway Camera Destroyed.
Cloud Backup Successfully Completed at 4:18 PM.
Daniel frowned.
Cloud backup?
He opened the attached notification.
Every recording from the hallway camera had already been uploaded to the company's encrypted server before the camera was destroyed.
Nothing had been lost.
His pulse quickened.
He logged into the secure account.
The final recording began playing.
At first, it showed Olivia opening the front door with a warm smile.
Then Vanessa walked inside carrying an expensive leather handbag.
They hugged.
For exactly twelve seconds.
Then everything changed.
Vanessa demanded the transfer code to the twins' $150,000 trust.
Olivia refused.
Vanessa slapped her.
Hard.
Daniel's hands began shaking.
The video continued.
Vanessa shoved Olivia into the hallway wall.
She screamed obscenities.
She punched Olivia directly in the stomach.
Once.
Then again.
Olivia collapsed.
Her water broke instantly.
Daniel stopped breathing.
But the worst part was still coming.
Vanessa leaned over Olivia, grabbed her by the hair, and hissed into her ear.
"Give me the code... or I'll make sure neither baby survives today."
Daniel felt physically sick.
Then he heard another voice on the recording.
Vanessa's.
Calm.
Cold.
Terrifying.
"It doesn't matter if Daniel finds out."
She smiled at Olivia.
"He'll be too busy explaining where the missing company money went."
Daniel froze.
Missing company money?
He had no idea what she was talking about.
The video ended.
A second notification appeared on the screen.
Additional files synchronized from linked financial archive.
Daniel stared at the message.
He had never linked any financial archive to the camera system.
Someone else had.

With trembling fingers, he clicked Download.
He had no idea that opening that folder would expose a betrayal far older—and far more dangerous—than the assault that had nearly killed his wife and unborn children.
