Chapter 16 - The Unopened Letter

Five years had passed since the nightmare ended.
The twins, Ethan and Maya, were now energetic six-year-olds, filling the Carter household with constant laughter. The shadows of Victor Hale and the chaotic trial had faded into distant memories.
Until the morning the silver key arrived.
Daniel was sorting through the mail in the kitchen while Olivia poured coffee. Among the bills and magazines was a plain white envelope with no return address. Inside, wrapped in a single piece of heavy parchment, was a small, antique silver key.
There was a short, handwritten note.
"The truth didn't end in the hospital. I have waited thirty-eight years. It is time you knew why."
Daniel stared at the precise, elegant handwriting. His blood ran cold.
"Daniel?"
Olivia asked, noticing his sudden stillness.
"What is it?"

Daniel handed her the note.
"It’s her. The woman from the hospital. The one who saved Ethan."
