Chapter 14 — The Trap Closes

Daniel read the card again.
Happy birthday, son.
His hands trembled—not from fear alone, but from rage.
Someone had entered the hospital.
Someone had stood close enough to the neonatal unit to leave a gift for a premature infant.
Someone had called himself Ethan's grandfather.
Rachel arrived within minutes after Daniel's frantic call.
Crime scene technicians sealed the gift box inside an evidence bag.
"No fingerprints," one technician reported.
"Not even partials."
Rachel wasn't surprised.
"DNA?"
"We'll test it."
Maya carefully examined the wooden music box.
"It's handmade."
She turned it over.
A tiny brass plate had been engraved underneath.
H & C Woodworks
Rachel frowned.
"Can we trace it?"
Maya nodded.
"If the workshop still exists."
Two hours later, the answer came back.
The workshop had closed thirteen years earlier.
Its final custom order had never been collected.
Customer name:
Victor Hale.
Delivery address:
A lakeside cabin nearly two hundred miles north of the city.
Rachel immediately organized a tactical team.
"If Victor left us this clue..."
One officer interrupted.
"You think it's real?"
Rachel looked at the music box.
"No."
"I think it's exactly where he wants us to go."
Daniel insisted on coming.
Rachel refused.
"This is a police operation."
"He almost killed my family."
"Which is exactly why you stay here."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You can't stop me."
Rachel stepped closer.
"If Victor wants anything..."
She looked him directly in the eye.
"...it's you."
Those words finally reached him.
Daniel reluctantly remained at the hospital.
But he couldn't shake the feeling that he was doing exactly what Victor expected.
That evening, a heavily armed tactical team surrounded the abandoned lakeside cabin.
Night had already fallen.
Thermal cameras showed one heat signature inside.
Rachel gave the signal.
The front door exploded inward.
"Police!"
Officers flooded every room.
The cabin was empty.
Only one oil lantern burned quietly in the center of the living room.
Beneath it sat a leather-bound journal.
Rachel opened the first page.
It wasn't Victor's diary.
It was Daniel's.
Baby photographs.
School report cards.
Copies of birthday invitations.
Family vacations.
Newspaper clippings.
Even Olivia's wedding dress fitting.
Every major event of Daniel's life had been documented.
Someone had been watching him...
Since childhood.
Rachel slowly turned another page.
The final entry had been written only three days earlier.
Daniel became a father today.
Below it, another sentence.
Michael kept his promise. Now it's my turn.
Rachel's pulse quickened.
Suddenly an officer shouted from upstairs.
"Detective!"
She ran.
Inside the attic, officers had found dozens of surveillance monitors.
Most were dark.
Three remained active.
One showed the entrance to Mercy Memorial Hospital.
Another showed Carter Holdings.
The third showed...
Rachel froze.
Her own apartment building.
Whoever had lived here wasn't just watching Daniel.
They had been watching the investigation itself.
Then every monitor suddenly switched to black.
White letters slowly appeared across every screen.
TOO LATE.
The cabin lights went out.
Outside...
A massive explosion rocked the hillside.
The tactical team barely escaped as flames swallowed the cabin.
The entire structure collapsed within seconds.
Victor had destroyed every remaining piece of evidence.
Or so he wanted them to believe.
Back at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Daniel refused to leave the NICU.
Olivia had finally fallen asleep beside Ethan's incubator.
Their daughter rested peacefully nearby.
Everything seemed calm.
Too calm.
A nurse entered carrying evening medication.
Daniel smiled politely.
"I don't think I've seen you before."
The woman paused.
"I just started the night shift."
She wore a surgical mask.
A hospital badge.
Blue scrubs.
Nothing unusual.
She approached Ethan's incubator.
Daniel noticed something.
Her badge was upside down.
He stood.
"Excuse me."
The nurse stopped.
"What department are you with?"
She answered immediately.
"Neonatal."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
Every NICU nurse wore purple identification badges.
Hers was white.
Rachel's warning echoed in his mind.
If Victor wants anything... it's you.
Daniel lunged forward just as the woman reached into her pocket.
A syringe flashed beneath the hospital lights.
The two crashed into the floor.
The syringe slid across the room.
Hospital security rushed inside.
The woman fought violently, stronger than anyone expected.
Three guards finally restrained her.
As officers pulled away her surgical mask...
Daniel's heart skipped.
He had never seen her before.
But she smiled calmly.
"You really do look like him."
Daniel stared.
"Who are you?"
The woman laughed softly.
May you like
Then she whispered five chilling words before police dragged her away.
"Your father sends his love."
