Chapter 21 - The Unseen Echo

The peace that Ethan and Olivia had built was not a fragile, glass structure. It was forged in fire, built upon a foundation of absolute transparency and hard-won trust.

For two years, Carter Holdings had thrived under Ethan’s visionary leadership. The pivot to sustainable energy had not only silenced his critics but had doubled the company’s market share.

Olivia stood in the sunlit kitchen of their estate, watching little Maya finger-paint at the low oak table.

"Look, Mommy!"

Maya giggled, holding up a paper smeared entirely with bright blue and yellow paint.

"It is an absolute masterpiece, sweetie,"

Olivia smiled warmly, kissing the top of her daughter's head.

The heavy, oak front door clicked open, and Ethan walked in, loosening his silk tie. He looked exhausted, but the moment his eyes found his wife and daughter, the corporate weariness instantly melted away from his shoulders.

"I have returned from the battlefield,"

Ethan announced playfully, scooping Maya up into his arms and spinning her around.

"How was the board meeting?"

Olivia asked, handing him a glass of iced water.

"Perfect, mostly,"

Ethan replied, his smile faltering for just a fraction of a second.

Olivia noticed it immediately. She knew every contour of his expressions.

"What is the 'mostly' part, Ethan?"

Olivia asked gently, crossing her arms.

"Our legal department caught an anomaly during the quarterly audit. A shadow firm, operating out of Geneva, has been quietly buying up minor shares of our subsidiaries,"

Ethan explained, his brow furrowing.

"It is likely just an aggressive hedge fund, but it felt... familiar."
