Chapter 8 - The Forged Signature

Vivian reached out to snatch the laptop, but I pulled it back out of her reach.
“Take a look at this document before you try to touch my property again,” I said, opening a scanned PDF file.
The official letterhead of a prominent downtown law firm appeared on the screen.
Vivian’s eyes narrowed, and then her entire posture stiffened. She recognized the logo immediately.
Six months ago, I had uncovered something disturbing while reviewing my husband’s tax filings. Vivian and Daniel had secretly met with a high-priced estate lawyer behind my back.
They had formally requested legal advice on three specific questions:
Can a spouse’s pre-marital corporate income be forcibly seized to pay off family estate mortgages?
Can Daniel be legally added as a co-owner to my private LLC without my explicit consent?
How can a family pressure a spouse into signing an irrevocable financial power of attorney?
The lawyer’s formal written response was attached to the email. He had explicitly warned them that my corporate income was held inside a pre-existing, ironclad LLC protected by the prenuptial agreement Daniel had signed before our wedding. The lawyer had subsequently dropped them as clients to avoid ethics violations.
“You tried to legally rob me,” I said, turning the screen to face the rest of the family. “You and your mother spent months trying to find a loophole to steal my business.”
Aunt Patricia gasped softly. “Daniel… is this true?”
“Wait, it gets better,” I said, scrolling to the final page of the file.
It was a draft authorization form attempting to transfer ownership of my secondary emergency fund directly into Vivian’s personal account.

At the bottom of the page was a signature. My name, written in dark blue ink.
Except I had never seen that document before in my life. It was a sloppy, desperate forgery.
