Chapter 37 - The Letter from Cell Block C

Before I could examine the Swiss document Julian handed me, my assistant knocked gently on the side of our booth, handing me my private mail folder.
"This came to the office this afternoon, Ms. Miller," my assistant whispered politely. "It's marked from the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute."
I opened the folder. Inside was a single sheet of cheap, yellowed prison paper, written in messy, blue ballpoint ink.
It was from Daniel.
I unfolded the letter and read his words silently:
“Emma,
I am writing this from my cell. The judge sentenced me to seven years in federal prison today. Mom got ten years at a separate facility in Florida. We have nothing left. No money, no home, no friends.
I know you hate me. I know I deserve everything that happened to me. But I need to tell you the truth about my father's Swiss partner. His name was Victor Vance—Julian Vance's father.
Julian didn't come to your penthouse that rainy night to help you, Emma. He came because my father stole twenty million dollars from the Vance family thirty years ago. Julian used you to get control of Mercer Logistics.
Be careful, Emma. You think you're the master of the board, but Julian is the one holding the chess pieces.
- Daniel”

I felt a faint chill creep up the back of my neck. I folded the letter slowly, slid it into my coat pocket, and looked up across the table at Julian Vance.
Julian was sitting there peacefully, cutting his steak with smooth, deliberate movements, smiling at me with those calm, intelligent blue eyes.
