Chapter 29 - Vivian's Collapse

|

"You evil, heartless monster!" Vivian screamed, trying to lunge across the table toward me.

The two police officers immediately grabbed her arms, pulling her back and pinning her against the wall.

"Mrs. Mercer, calm down now!" Officer Davis ordered firmly.

"She stole my life!" Vivian howled, tears streaming down her wrinkled, wet face. "I am a Mercer! I am high society! You can't leave me with nothing!"

"You didn't build anything, Vivian," I said, stopping at the boardroom door and looking back at her. "You spent thirty years consuming other people's hard work. You consumed Arthur until he died, and then you tried to consume me."

"I'll sue you!" she spat, her voice cracking into a pathetic raspy sob. "I'll take you to the Supreme Court!"

"With what money, Vivian?" Marcus Vance interjected coolly from the table. "You currently owe ninety-four thousand dollars in public defense fees, state fines, and back taxes. And as of five minutes ago, your probation has been formally revoked."

Officer Davis clicked a second set of heavy restraints onto Vivian's ankles. "Let's go, ma'am. You're going back to the county correctional facility to await your revocation hearing."

As the officers dragged Vivian screaming down the hallway, her golden illusion was stripped away once and for all. The socialites she had bragged to, the country club members she had looked down upon, and the family she had manipulated would all read about her arrest in the evening news.

I walked out of the law firm into the morning sunlight, feeling the cool autumn breeze against my face.

I had my freedom. I had my firm. And now, I had the resources to change the world on my own terms.
