Chapter 40 - The Zurich Key

I stood up from the dinner table, leaving Julian sitting alone in the warm glow of the restaurant candlelight.

"Emma," Julian called out softly as I reached the aisle.

I stopped and looked back over my shoulder.

"You won this round," Julian said, his eyes glittering with a mixture of respect and intense challenge. "But Arthur Mercer didn't just leave a Swiss vault. He left a master safety deposit box in Geneva. Box 714."

He pulled a small, heavy antique brass key from his vest pocket and set it flat on the white tablecloth between our wine glasses.

"Inside that box are the original corporate deeds linking the Mercer family, my father's firm, and a international syndicate operating out of London," Julian said, his voice carrying an icy edge. "It contains enough evidence to bring down three major investment banks—or build the greatest financial powerhouse in the world."

I stared at the brass key resting on the white linen.

Outside, a light evening rain began to tap against the grand glass windows of the harbor restaurant, mirroring the night my journey had begun a year ago.

"The key is yours, Emma," Julian whispered, gesturing toward the brass object. "If you take it, you step into a war much bigger than Vivian and Daniel. If you leave it, you walk away with your millions and live in peace forever."
