Chapter 16 - The Prenup Wall

|
The following week, Daniel and his newly appointed defense attorney sat across from me and Marcus in a cold, sterile conference room at my lawyer’s firm.
Daniel looked terrible. Dark circles hung heavy under his eyes, his suit was unpressed, and he had lost at least ten pounds in less than a month.
His lawyer, a tired-looking man named Mr. Henderson, set a stack of papers on the table.
"Mrs. Miller," Henderson began cautiously. "My client is willing to sign an uncontested divorce decree today under one condition. We request a lump-sum severance payment of $150,000 from your corporate holdings to settle his martial equity claim."
Marcus let out a short, mocking laugh. "Severance? This is a marriage dissolution, Mr. Henderson, not a corporate layoff."
"My client contributed to the household while Mrs. Miller built her business reputation!" Henderson argued, though his tone lacked conviction.
I leaned forward, folding my hands neatly on the table.
"Daniel," I said softly, looking my husband in the eye. "Do you really want to do this?"
Daniel couldn't meet my gaze. "Emma... I have nothing left. The bank is foreclosing on the mansion next month. Mom is facing criminal charges. I need something to start over."
"You had everything, Daniel," I said firmly. "You had a loyal wife, a comfortable home, and a partner who worked tirelessly to protect you. But you traded all of it away because you were too cowardly to stand up to your mother."
Marcus slid a thick document across the table.
"This is the forensic accounting report of the $312,000 my client funneled into your family's accounts over three years," Marcus stated. "If you pursue a financial claim against my client's LLC, we will immediately file a counter-suit for civil fraud, conversion, and forgery regarding the unauthorized authorization document."

Henderson quickly skimmed the report. He leaned over to Daniel and whispered harshly in his ear: "If they counter-sue, you will end up owing her over two hundred thousand dollars personally. Sign the agreement now."
Daniel’s hands trembled as he picked up the pen. With a heavy, defeated sigh, he signed his name on the line, surrendering every legal claim to my life forever.
