Chapter 24 - A Viper in the Rain

I stared at the phone in total disbelief.

"You and your mother tried to destroy my life, frame me for debt, and assault me in your dining room," I said softly into the microphone. "And now you want me to commit federal financial fraud to save you from loan sharks?"

"Emma—"

"Goodbye, Daniel," I said flatly, ending the call before he could utter another word.

I immediately blocked his number again.

Before I could set the phone down, the penthouse intercom chime rang out for the second time that night.

Julian stepped over to the wall monitor, looking at the camera feed. His eyebrows pulled together in a tight, annoyed line.

"It seems your ex-family doesn't know when to give up," Julian remarked dryly.

I walked over to look at the screen.

Standing in the street rain outside the building's main glass lobby doors was Vivian Mercer.

She wasn't wearing her silk dresses or pearl necklaces now. She wore a soaking wet, faded raincoat over her cheap clothes. Her hair was plastered to her scalp, her makeup ruined, and her face twisted in pure, unadulterated madness. She was screaming at the night security guard, pounding her fists violently against the heavy glass doors.

"Let me in!" Vivian’s muffled shrieks echoed faintly through the lobby microphone. "I know he's up there! Emma, you thief! Give us back our family money!"

"She broke her probation," I noted calmly, watching the security guard pull out his radio to call the police. "She isn't supposed to come within five hundred feet of my residence."

"She’s desperate, Emma," Julian said, shutting his briefcase. "Because she knows that tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, the Cayman court will officially transfer control of that trust directly into your hands."
